Now that the Pelosi Posse has assumed control of Capitol Hill, one of the issues we will hear a lot about is raising the minimum wage. Liberals from both parties say that it is crucial for America to raise the minimun wage. Why? Because the current minimum wage doesn't provide enough for a reasonable standard of living. Also, because big corporate fat cats make billions each year, so "it's only fair" that we "do the compassionate and fair thing" and raise the minimum wage for the poor. Also, because it is the responsibility of government to provide for the poor. Have I left anything out? I made a sincere effort there to recite the liberal talking points without retching, I really did. Now, let's talk about the truth, all of which is documented in the above links.
The truth is that each 10% hike in the minimum wage causes anywhere from 2-6% of minimum wage earners to lose their job. Most minimum wage earners are young blacks, so it is not a stretch to call a minimum wage hike a racist attack on African Americans. The truth is that big corporations don't have very many employees making minimum wage. Most minimum wage earners work for small businesses. Therefore, a minimum wage hike is an assault on small business. 2006 saw the greatest increase in history of black-owned small businesses in America. Many of those black-owned businesses employ young blacks. The liberals who are pushing for a minimum wage hike are conducting a legislative assault on America's blacks, and for that they should be ashamed!
Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman once said, "We regard the minimum wage as one of the most, if not the most, anti-black laws on the statute books." The conservative opposes minimum wage hikes, while the liberal supports them. Tell me again which is the compassionate one?
