today in history--1999

Jan. 7, 1999--The Senate impeachment trial of Pres. Bill Clinton began. The president had been impeached in the House on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice on December 19, 1998, becoming the first president since Andrew Johnson to be impeached. The Senate trial lasted 5 weeks before the Felon-In-Chief was acquitted. Random thoughts I have had concerning this blot on American history:
1. When, during the Nixon administration, it became clear that the president would be impeached, Nixon resigned rather than subjecting the nation to the ugliness of an impeachment trial. I have never thought of Nixon as a man of character, but he at least did the right thing in this instance. What conclusions can we draw from the fact that Clinton refused to resign? At the very least, we can certainly say that Clinton had even less character than Nixon. Wow!
2. Remember how the Democrats kept screaming about how mean the GOP was? Republicans were persecuting the Democrat Savior, and this just wasn't acceptable! Democrats warned Republicans (they only warn us because they care) that the GOP would get kicked in the chops by angry voters in 2000 because we were so mean to this hugely popular president. So what really happened? Well, the cold light of harsh reality reveals that George Bush defeated the sitting vice president, getting more popular votes than Clinton ever got. The GOP maintained control of the House and the Senate, and the GOP kept 29 of the nation's gubernatorial offices under Republican control. And this was after the Democrats successfully disenfranchised the military vote, a constituency that has consistently voted Republican.
3. One of the Democrat attack dogs in the Nixon impeachment was Hillary Rodham. How ironic!
4. Why is it that, when a Republican is found to be a crook, the Republican always resigns, but when a Democrat is found to be a crook, the Democrats rally around that crook as if he were a returning war hero?
5. I don't think that the American public, as a whole, has any idea at all of just how dangerous a situation that was, having a president who couldn't keep it in his pants. A president who is that obsessed with casual sex with anything that walks puts himself, and the country, in a very precarious position. What would have happened if a foreign power had used sex as a tool to put the president in a blackmail-type position? The United States was extremely fortunate that Clinton's libido never caused any more trouble than it did. This is why it is so vitally important that we elect men and women of character to public office. Character is the most important qualification there is!
