this weekend in football history

January 14, 1962---The greatest collection of football talent ever assembled on one field on this, or any other planet, battled it out in the NFL Pro Bowl.
The Western Conference team, featuring 20 future Hall of Famers, defeated the Eastern Conference team 31-30. The Eastern Conference teams had "only" 8 future Hall of Famers, making for a total of 28 future inductees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in that historic contest. Highlights of the game included a 70 yard TD run by Jim Brown and a 42 yard interception return for a TD by Dick "Night Train" Lane. Following is the complete list of the "living legends" who played in that game:

Eastern Conference
QB's: Sonny Jurgensen, Y.A. Tittle
RB: Jim Brown
WR: Tommy McDonald
OL: Mike McCormick
DL: Andy Robustelli, Ernie Stautner
LB: Sam Huff

Western Conference
QB's: Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas
RB's: Hugh McElhenny, Lenny Moore, Jim Taylor
WR: Raymond Berry
TE: Mike Ditka
OL: Forrest Gregg, Stan Jones, Jim Ringo, Jim Parker, Bob St. Clair
DL: Doug Atkins, Henry Jordan, Gino Marchetti, Leo Nomellini
LB: Bill George, Joe Schmidt
DB: Dick "Night Train" Lane, Yale Lary

January 14, 1973---The Miami Dolphins defeat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII to complete the only perfect, undefeated season in NFL history. Oddly, the Dolphins were 3-point underdogs in that game, but won 14-7. The Dolphins No-Name Defense, led by Manny Fernandez, Nick Buoniconti, Vern Den Herder, Dick Anderson, and Super Bowl MVP Jake Scott, only allowed the Redskins offense to cross midfield twice during the entire game. Washington's only TD was scored as a result of the infamous botched field goal attempt by Garo Yepremian, which was returned 49 yards for a TD by Redskins cornerback Mike Bass. The Miami offense was led by QB Bob Griese, RB's Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick and Mercury Morris, WR Paul Warfield, and future Hall of Fame OL Larry Little and Jim Langer. Interesting note--Griese was injured for most of the season (broken leg in Game 5), but his backup, Earl Morrall, led the Dolphins to wins in their final 9 regular season games. Morrall had been Johnny Unitas' backup in Baltimore, and had actually been the starting QB for Baltimore in Super Bowl III.
