the christian conservative vs the secular liberal
One of the reasons why we started this blog was that we wanted to educate people, as much as possible, about the truths inherent in Christian conservatism and the falsehoods inherent in secular liberalism. We have found an appropriate opportunity to do just that.
Tom Ehrich is an Episcopal priest, writer and consultant who also writes a syndicated weekly column appearing in newspapers across the country. His Web site is www.onajourney.org. We read his June 10 column in The Indianapolis Star, and it can be found at www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060610/LIVING09/606100380/1111. This column is an absolute textbook on everything that is false and dishonest within the liberal thought process. Let's break the column down paragraph by paragraph and you'll see what we mean.
Paragraph 1-- "I understand that people have different views on homosexuality...". No he doesn't. Read his entire column, and his previous columns, and you will discover that Mr. Ehrich thinks that anyone who believes that homosexuality is a sin is in fact an ignorant bigot. He can believe whatever he wants to believe, but don't patronize us with such a condescending and dishonest statement right out of the gate.
Paragraph 2--"But I cannot fathom the political and moral logic that lies behind...the gay marriage ban." Here is a true statement, one of the few truths contained in his column. He just doesn't get it.
Paragraph 4--"The Constitution doesn't exist to resolve religious disputes." Another true statement, but one that completely misses the point. The proponents of the gay marriage amendment aren't attempting to resolve a religious dispute. They are attempting to resolve a political dispute, and there's a big difference. If the amendment were to pass, it would only affect the legal status of marriage. Churches would be free to debate Scriptural doctrine concerning homosexuality with no interference from the government, just as it's always been.
Paragraphs 4, 5, and 7--The Constitution exists--- "to provide a just and equitable environment of laws and rights in which citizens can address religious issues..."; "to ensure an environment of freedom in which the ways Americans live can flourish and evolve..."; and "to provide an environment in which all citizens may worship and believe as they choose." Wow! That's a lot of liberal gobbledegook to sort through! Why don't we refer to the actual written text of the Constitution to see what its purpose is:
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
That's pretty clear. Oh, and just in case any liberal reading this tries to distort the meanings of any of those words, take a look at these words from the 1905 Supreme Court case Jacobson v Massachusettes:
The liberty secured by the Constitution of the United States does not import an absolute right in each person to be at all times, and in all circumstances, wholly freed from restraint, nor is it an element in such liberty that one person, or a minority of persons residing in any community and enjoying the benefits of its local government, should have power to dominate the majority when supported in their action by the authority of the state.
That's pretty clear, as well. Let's move on.
Paragraph 5--"The Constitution doesn't exist to implement a certain 'American way of life.' " Yes it does! Mr. Ehrich, with all due respect, you should return your high school diploma and retake high school American Government. The Constitution absolutely, beyond a shadow or a sliver of a doubt, does indeed exist to implement a unique American way of life based upon the teachings of Christianity. Don't take our word for it. Read the words of some of the men who created The United States of America:
"The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity."--John Adams
"[July 4th] ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverence by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty."--John Adams
"It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been offered asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here."--Patrick Henry
There has never, in the history of the world, been any other nation, besides the U.S.A., founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ and upon the belief that He is the Way to eternal life. We would encourage you to go online and read the writings of James Madison, John Jay, Fisher Ames (the author of the 1st Amendment), George Washington, Noah Webster and the rest of our Founding Fathers to see for yourself. We report-you decide!
Paragraph 7--Mr. Ehrich calls the gay marriage amendment "faith by fiat'. No it isn't! NOBODY who supports this amendment is attempting to tell anyone else what to believe or how to worship. We simply want the traditional definition of marriage preserved.
Paragraph 8--"The beauty of our constitutional system is that it guarantees our right to disagree, to speak freely and to work out our disagreements in the complex matrix of family, community, civic debate, free elections, publishing and commerce." Complex matrix? Is he talking about the Keanu Reeves/Lawrence Fishburn movie? Honestly, how are we supposed to take liberals seriously when they say silly stuff like this? For the record, the Constitution doesn't say anything about a complex matrix, or anything else in the above quote. We do, however, think the Constitution might have something to say about Sandra Bullock in Speed.
Paragraph 12--This is where Mr. Ehrich takes a leap that Evil Kinevil would be envious of. He says that if the gay marriage amendment is passed, we dangerous Christians will start to blame gays every time we quarrel with our spouse. This dangerous dynamic will inevitably lead to the mass murder of all gays and lesbians, organized by the Christian Church. Good grief!!! Do we really have to say anything in response to that cockamamie statement? The thought process of a liberal never ceases to amaze!
When a secular progressive lies, it is the duty of all Christian conservatives everywhere to stand up, speak out, and let people know what the truth really is. That was our purpose with this (really long!) post, and you will see more in the future.
Sincerely,
The Conservative Christians
