what would happen if.....

Take a little trip with me, won't you? Let's all travel to a place that I like to call "What Would Happen If....." . It's an easy place to get to; just open your mind and read along with me:

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Buffy Van Teppe. Buffy was a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair and the most captivating blue eyes you have ever seen. She was captain of the cheerleading squad at State U, where she majored in fashion design. Her parents were the wealthy philanthropists, Dirk and Susan Van Teppe. They had just recently donated $1 million from their foundation to help fund a much-needed expansion of the University Library.
One Saturday morning, Buffy showed up at the University Health Clinic with a most tragic story. She had been raped! The nurse at the clinic called the police, and Buffy told them all about it.
It seems that she had been at a party the previous night at the off-campus house of three of the University basketball players--Terrell Gunn, Marcus Lincoln, and Roosevelt Suggs. The whole team had been there, as well as most of the cheerleaders and many other students from across campus. According to Buffy, Terrell had invited her to join him and his two roommates in a private room upstairs where he said they had some real high-grade marijuana they wanted to smoke with her. When she went into the room, Buffy said, Roosevelt grabbed her, held her down, and all three players took turns with her. After they finished, they called her a cab and sent her on her way.
The chief investigating officer on her case was a big, burly red-neck named Buford T. Justice. Officer Justice was notorious on campus for the way that he continually harrassed the African-American students. You see, Buford was one of those ignorant souls that just didn't like black folk! As Buffy recounted her story for Buford and the attending nurses, Officer Justice took no notes, but the head nurse did. Buford told Buffy that he would see to it personally that the horrific assault committed against her by "those colored boys", as he colorfully put it, would be avenged.
The Prosecuting Attorney held a press conference that very afternoon, announcing that Suggs, Lincoln and Gunn had been arrested and that he was prosecuting them for the rape of Buffy Van Teppe. Buffy's parents spoke at the press conference, and said how distubing it was to them that such "sex-crazed animals" were allowed to attend State U just because they could hit a jump shot. Students and faculty member alike began putting up signs all over campus, saying ugly things like "Go Back To The 'Hood and Leave Our Daughters Alone!" All manner of filthy, racist bile was plastered on every wall on campus, it seemed.
As the weeks went by, a curious thing happened. Young Buffy's story began to unravel. It seems that Roosevelt and Suggs weren't even at the party at the time Buffy said that the rape happened. They had gone to the liquor store to buy more booze, and they used a credit card. The liquor store had a security camera, so between the time stamp on the video and the time coded on the credit card receipt, these two young men had an air-tight alibi. Well, Buffy said, maybe she was confused about the time. She was re-interviewed by Officer Buford T. Justice. After the interview Buffy had a different account of events. Buford produced his "case notes" and said that Buffy's story had, in fact, been consistent all along. He said that his notes from the first interview proved that. The head nurse at the clinic came forward, though, and stated that Officer Justice didn't take any notes at the clinic, but that her notes showed that Buffy had no physical signs of sexual assault, and there was absolutely zero trace evidence on her body or her clothes. That would be very unusual in a case of gang rape.
As the months went by, Buffy's story continued to "evolve." One part of her story never changed, though. She continued to insist that she was the victim of out-of-control black athletes who were culled from the inner city just to play basketball and make the university some money. The prosecutor continued to insist that he believed Buffy's story, despite the wildly inconsistent, ever-changing quality of her version of the events.
While all of this was going on, the three basketball players saw their lives fall apart. The accusations led to all three being kicked off the basketball team, and the remainder of the basketball season to be cancelled. All of the black players withdrew from school since they didn't have a team anymore, and attempted to find jobs in that college town. They were not successful. As I write this, the State Attorney General's office announced that they were taking the case over from the local prosecutor, since there seemed to be so many ethical "questions" about the way he had handled the case. The Attorney General announced that he would be taking the next six weeks to study all of the case files before announcing how he would proceed. In the meantime, the three players continued to wait for justice.

OK, we're back to the "real world." The above story never happened, of course, but what if it did? What do you think the reaction of the ACLU would be? How about the NAACP? How about Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or any of the other "rhyming reverends" that always seem to parachute in whenever danger arises? What would the reaction of the drive-by media be? Would there be wall-to-wall coverage of the racial injustice these basketball players had been subjected to? Would Oprah be having a telethon to raise money for the legal defense fund of these young players? Would the headlines scream about how common it is for privleged, young white women to falsely accuse innocent black men of sexual crimes, and how often times those young black men would pay with their lives? Would we see continuous footage of the Emmett Till funeral, and the funerals of other innocent black men wrongly accused?
With your mind's eye, try to envision all of the "blowback" if a rich, white, pretty college girl falsely accused poor, black, male college athletes of raping her, and then was discovered to have made it all up. Just what do you think would happen?
Compare all of that to the Duke lacrosse case. Are there any limits to the dishonesty and hypocracy of the liberal intelligentsia? Take a look at the following links, and decide for yourself.
