today in history
I was amazed at how many noteworthy historical events, besides the obvious one 5 years ago, have occurred on Sept. 11. Here is a partial list:
1789-- Alexander Hamilton was appointed the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury
1971-- Former Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev died. He was 77.
1973-- Chilean President Salvadore Allende died in a violent military coup.
1974-- An Eastern Airlines DC-9 crashed during a landing attempt in Charlotte, NC, killing 71
passengers.
1985-- Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds singled to center field off of Eric Show of the San
Diego Padres. It was career hit number 4192 for Rose, breaking the old record
held by Ty Cobb. (Note: I was in Chicago when Rose "tied Ty" with hit #4191 the
previous weekend. It was an exciting moment to witness.)
