this day in history: 9/2/1945

September 2, 1945---Japan formally surrendered to the Allies aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. World War II was officially over.
If you are familiar with your U.S. History, you know that the U.S. issued the Potsdam Declaration in July of 1945, which called for the unconditional surrender of all Japanese armed forces. The declaration also promised the complete destruction of the Japanese military and the utter devastation of the Japanese homeland if Japan refused to surrender. Well, Japan refused to surrender, we gave them Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan decided to surrender. If Pres. Truman had not made the incredibly courageous decision to use the atomic bomb, and to use it twice, America would have been forced to proceed with "Operation Olympic", an all-out attack against the main Japanese home islands. Most military experts say that, in terms of casualties, Operation Olympic would have been 10 times more costly than the invasion of Normandy. Truman's decision to nuke two Japanese cities saved thousands of lives.
There is a lesson there for anyone who has any interest in truth.
