liberalism is a cancer
Liberalism is a horrible cancer that kills whatever it infects. It is a disease of the heart, mind, and soul that renders a person unable to discern fact from fiction, right from wrong, and justice from injustice. Once infected by this insidious disease, a person becomes completely incapable of using facts, logic, or reason under any circumstances. How else does one explain what is currently happening within the Episcopal Church?
The Episcopal Church is currently debating whether or not homosexuality is a sin (isn't that God's decision to make?) and whether or not Jesus Christ is the One, True Way to everlasting life (doesn't John 14:1-7 settle that question for us?). You can read a very clear account of the debate, written by Cal Thomas, at http://jewishworldreview.com/cols/thomas062206.asp. You can also read two letters to the editors of The Indianapolis Star which respond to the Thomas column (www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060627/OPINION01/606270363/-1/ARCHIVE for the first one, and www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060627/OPINION01/606270370/-1/ARCHIVE for the second one). These two letters are actually from members of the Episcopalian clergy, making them especially instructive. After reading Thomas' column and the "official" response, we are left to see very clearly that the Episcopal Church has become infected with liberalism. Let's walk through this so that even a liberal might be able to see what is wrong with this picture.
The Bible couldn't be more clear--homosexuality is a sin. So are divorce, and stealing, and lying, and murder, and pride, and a whole host of other actions and behaviors. This means that homosexuality is no better, no worse, and no different from any other sin, in that it separates us from God, putting the sinner in the humbling position of needing God's transforming grace through His Son Jesus Christ for salvation. Any man, woman, or church that says otherwise is gulty of adding and/or subtracting from God's Word. Read Revelation 22:18-19 for that penalty. The Bible is not a "living document" which we are free to reinterpret as we see fit, any more than the U.S. Constitution is a "living constitution" which changes meaning as we continue to "evolve". The Christian conservative believes that the Bible is the inspired word of God, that it very clearly defines for us what "sin" is, and that it even more clearly tells us how to receive eternal life. We believe further that our Founding Fathers based this great republic on principles found in that same God-inspired Scripture. There is a mountain, higher than Killimanjaro, of hard, cold, verifiable, factual, historical evidence supporting everything I have just said. Those not infected by the disease of liberalism can seek out the facts and learn the truth. Those already consumed by the cancer can, like an obnoxious 4 year old, close their eyes, cover their ears, and chant over and over again. "I can't hear you! I can't hear you!".
