This is an excellent Michael Barone column from last year, in which he calls out America's liberals and labels them as our "covert enemies." From his column:
In our war against Islamo-fascist terrorism, we face enemies both overt and covert. The overt enemies are, of course, the terrorists themselves. Their motives are clear: They hate our society because of its freedoms and liberties, and want to make us all submit to their totalitarian form of Islam. They are busy trying to wreak harm on us in any way they can. Against them we can fight back, as we did when British authorities arrested the men and women who were plotting to blow up a dozen airliners over the Atlantic.
Our covert enemies are harder to identify, for they live in large numbers within our midst. And in terms of intentions, they are not enemies in the sense that they consciously wish to destroy our society. On the contrary, they enjoy our freedoms and often call for their expansion. But they have also been working, over many years, to undermine faith in our society and confidence in its goodness. These covert enemies are those among our elites who have promoted the ideas labeled as multiculturalism, moral relativism and (the term is Professor Samuel Huntington's) transnationalism.
Barone makes a number of good points, but, as usual, he stops one step short of "closing the deal." He says that America's liberals don't "consciously wish to destroy our society," and that "they enjoy our freedoms and often call for their expansion." Quite simply, this just isn't true. The modern liberal does want to destroy the America of our Fathers, they hate our freedom just as much as the Islamofascists do, and they are constantly seeking to curtail those freedoms. Proof that what I'm saying is true:
1. Our Founding Fathers believed that our Heavenly Father made all men equal--equal in His eyes and equal under human law. Liberals are conducting a secular-fascist jihad against America's Christian heritage. Their stated goal is to totally wipe out all public expressions of Christian faith in America. 2. Our Founding Fathers believed that all men are endowed by God with certain natural rights that can't be taken away from us. Among those rights are life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness. They further believed that, in order to secure those rights, men institute government, which gets its power from the people, This is known as popular sovereignty. Liberals believe that Mommy and Daddy Government, under the control of a liberal activist judiciary unaccountable to the people, is the source of our rights. 3. The Founding Fathers believed that these God-given rights were best protected by a written constitution limiting the scope of governmental power. Liberals believe in "living constitution," which is code for "The Constitution means whatever liberals say it means. Pay no attention to the actual words."
4. Our Founders created a republican form of government, but the modern liberal continually tries to thwart the will of the people through voter fraud, intimidation, and judicial activism.
5. Our Founders built this republic on the principles of federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, majority rules, protection of the natural rights of the minority, and a free market economy. The modern liberal seeks to destroy all of that, and replace it with a socialist, all-powerful centralized government. This so-called "liberal utopia" would suppress the majority in favor of government-approved minority groups. Power would be consolidated within a liberal bureaucracy and a liberal judiciary, both of which would be unaccountable to the people.
You think that liberals want to expand our freedoms? Think again!
Liberals want to do away with freedom of speech and freedom of the press through campaign finance reform and the Fairness Doctrine.
Liberals want to do away with our right to freely exercise our religious beliefs. They want to replace it with "freedom from religion." Liberals want to establish secular humanism as the official state religion, with Al Gore's Church of Global Warming and Science Fiction as the main denomination.
Liberals want to pretend that the 2nd Amendment doesn't exist.
Liberals want to take away right to freely own private property. See Kelo v. City of New London.
Liberals don't believe in the 4th Amendment. Just ask Elio Gonzales.
Liberals don't believe in the 5th or 6th Amendments. Just ask the Duke lacrosse players.
Liberals have never heard of the 10th Amendment.
What strategies are liberals employing in their jihad against the America of our Fathers? They have gained control of our public schools and our colleges and universities. This gives them the ability to indoctrinate our young people in the principles of socialism and secular humanism. Thank God for organizations like Young America's Foundation!
They have gained control of our bureaucracies. Our government agencies, bureaus, commissions, etc. are lousy with liberals, and they are beyond the control of the electorate. Unfortunately, it is the federal bureaucracy which, all too often, decides how and when public policy is carried out. This is why it is absolutely crucial that principled conservatives work to reduce the size and scope of government.
They control America's media, and our entertainment industry. The good news is that, thanks mostly to Rush Limbaugh, conservatism has found it's voice in America's culture, but liberals are feverishly trying to destroy that voice with hate speech legislation and the Fairness Doctrine.
So, you still agree with Michael Barone that America's left isn't trying to destroy our society? You just aren't paying attention.
