what would God have us do?
These are rocky times in this broken world. Western civilization is under attack from a false and violent religion. We have false teachers within the Christian church who teach a false Gospel and who are responsible for leading people away from God. The forces of secularism/Satan are fighting around the clock to knock holes in our faith so that we turn away from God. What should we do?
Jesus made our "marching orders" pretty simple. Mark 12:28-34 says, "One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[e] Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'[f] The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[g]There is no commandment greater than these."
"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
Matthew 28:16-20 says, "Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
It's pretty simple, folks! We are to love God with our entire being. That means that we are to regularly converse with Him in prayer, that we are to make it a practice to read His Holy Word, that we are to follow all of what the Bible says, and we are to ask for wisdom so that we may be able to discern His will and to tell good from evil.
We are to love and serve others as much as we love and serve ourselves. That means that we are to be vocal about sin. That doesn't mean that we are to hate sinners, because all of us are sinners and we all need love. It does mean that we are to condemn sin itself and that we are to encourage others to resist sin. It also means that we are not to "tolerate" sin as if it was OK. It's not OK! Sin leads to death, and we are to speak openly and aggressively against sin, and against those who promote sin. We are also to minister to the needs of others, in every way that they need. That is our mission, and we are commanded to make mission a way of life!
We are to tell others about the Good News of Jesus. We are to do that through our words and through our deeds. Actually, telling others the Good News through our deeds is probably a more powerful witness than through our words. We are to start in our homes and spiral outward. If we "evangelize" effectively in our homes, the words and deeds of our children will spiral outward and onward to continue spreading the Good News.
After a lot of years "wandering around in the wilderness", I am attempting to do what Jesus has told us to do. Some days I do OK, and some days I don't. We all have to do a better job because the world is desperately searching for some "salt and light" Christian leadership. Even if the world doesn't know it!
Put the following under the category of "food for thought on the journey." Have a great day!
"Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven."----Matthew 5:13-16 (The Message)
